In the near future, humans have abandoned governments and religions. To make important decisions, they now seek guidance from councils of local plants, affectionately called the sages. Come meet them in this exhibition that honors the relationship between human and non-human.
Biography
Passionate about making her own artistic materials, Faustine Escoffier has just received the ART+Environment award from the Conseil de la culture de l’Estrie. Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Bishop’s University, she conducted research on plant-based papers and the use of plant pigments in printmaking thanks to the Fonds de Recherche du Québec and the Denis Charland Scholarship. She has participated in several group exhibitions at the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke, La Biennale du lin in Grondines, at the Maison des arts et de la culture de Brompton, and at Art Mûr in Montreal.
Approach
Through the intersection of printmaking, artist books, fiber art, and painting, my practice is driven by a desire for the flattening of hierarchies among living beings of which I am a part. I explore means, beliefs, and utopias that enable and inspire a relationship of reciprocity. My practice takes me into fields or forests where I observe, cultivate, or harvest some of my raw materials. Mineral pigments, dye plants, or fiber plants become colors, papers, or thread. Also sensitive to the value of discarded or rejected materials, I collect old fabrics and damaged wood to give them a second life.
