At the end of the residency, we will open the work-in-progress to the public: sharing the week’s discoveries, our respective approaches to creation for young audiences, and our joint research. Perhaps some filmed footage as a bonus, followed by an open discussion to inform what comes next.

Biography

Karine Sauvé is an interdisciplinary artist and founder of the company Mammifères. Trained in contemporary puppet theatre at UQAM, she creates a tender and bold material theatre at the crossroads of visual arts and performative concert.

Érika Tremblay-Roy, playwright and director, leads Le Petit Théâtre de Sherbrooke. She creates powerful and sensitive interdisciplinary works that challenge young audiences with freedom and intelligence.

Approach

ANIMAL is a scenic research work-in-progress for ages 2 to 8 imagined by Karine Sauvé and Érika Tremblay-Roy, produced by Le Petit Théâtre de Sherbrooke. Building on the approach begun with the show Le Potager (2021), we want to explore a more edgy, more instinctive rock concert form, where the drums pound, the guitar skids, and the voice cuts through. Nothing is fixed: we’re testing a cross-shaped stage, surrounded by the audience, to circulate energy and blur boundaries. Animality becomes a territory of exploration—breath, tension, thrill. Video could be projected on the floor, on bodies, like living matter in dialogue with the music. A raw, vibrant, untamed laboratory.
