Inspired by his recent collection, Du premier au dernier jour, Charles Sagalane invites the public to his poetry rituals. How do you bring a printed page to life? When reading becomes a collective endeavor, fueled by sharing and transmission, where gestures and voices echo one another.
Biography
When he writes, Charles Sagalane summons artistic and non-artistic practices alike, such as the art of collecting, walking, performance and installation, wild foraging, or meditation. His entire body of work is part of a vast structure, the Musée Moi (Me Museum), for which he is the handyman. His experience as a survival librarian has made him sensitive to the alterations of fire and water, which he uses in his literary arts creations. For him, writing finds its home on paper, bark, or wood; it reveals itself through lead, the typewriter, or the woodburner; and it is nourished by crossing out, listing, pasting, sampling, and recycling.
Approach
Charles Sagalane was born and lives in Lac-St-Jean. He has published eight works with Éditions La Peuplade. He likes writing to be free, intuitive, and diligent. His interdisciplinary projects, such as the Survival Library and the Literary Forest, establish in situ collaborative laboratories fueled by creative invitations. He enjoys collaborating in creative duos with multidisciplinary artists such as Amélie Courtois, Éric Normand, Magalie Baribeau-Marchand, and Stéphanie Fillion. In his eyes, the writer’s craft consists of living writing adventures that will become formulas, pages, and books. In 2022, he was the recipient of the CALQ Artist of the Year award for Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.
