Public presentation
I AM A SEED awakens us to the fact that all the plants in our lives are the result of a selection process that is not only natural, but also cultural: the result of economic, practical, ethical, and aesthetic choices made by humans—societal choices that have forged our current food system. Indirectly, this activity invites us to become aware of the role of plants in our lives and the possibilities for co-evolution between humanity and the plant kingdom. Become one of these plants for a moment, and see how you face different environmental, agricultural, and socio-economic contexts related to food systems!
Biography
A visual artist by training, Patrice Fortier has used plant materials as a medium since his early days. Photographic exhibitions, living installations, collective rituals, and collaborations with various artists are at the heart of a practice that led him to found La société des plantes 25 years ago. This seed farm caters to gardeners and farmers looking for hardy, sometimes unusual varieties, specifically tested in a northern climate. He was also named “Producer of the Year” at the Lauriers de la gastronomie québécoise in 2024.
Approach
Patrice Fortier’s practice explores plant richness as a living language, through an artistic and agroecological approach.
He specializes in creating selection protocols that focus on the organoleptic qualities of plants, their beauty, ethnobotany, living heritage, and gastronomy. Patrice strives to combine a poetic spirit with a very high standard for seed quality, aiming to provide the foundations for a beautiful, delicious, useful, and resilient garden that contributes to the diversification of food autonomy.
