The work produced should resemble a simple play with chosen objects. Thus, we expect to see these original objects alongside their doubles—that is, what they have generated through casting experiments. They will be seen in both positive and negative forms, as the entire setup is part of the experience.
Biography
The holder of two bachelor’s degrees—in philosophy and visual arts—as well as a master’s in Quebec studies, François Mathieu explores writing and primarily sculpture. With several public art projects to his credit, he has also presented his work in Canada, Mexico, and Belgium. He is a curious and open-minded individual. He is characterized by a love of tinkering for its own sake and the pleasure of making.
Approach
His approach is neither figurative nor abstract: it is concrete. Sculptural work calls for actions but also presents a range of resistances. He then deploys a suitable, often even counter-intuitive, materiality. His entire vocabulary stems from this, a blend of poetry and technicality in equal parts. For him, labor, repetitions, errors, and inaccuracies are vectors of transformation that are not always the result of intention. It is a dialogue with things that, in the end, generates objects of meaning.
