The Wesuwecuwon performance stages the memories, dreams, and lives of the Wabanaki Confederacy peoples in a work that is simultaneously narrated, sung, and danced.

In the Wolastoqey language, wesuwecuwon speaks of the returning current – it flows back. Water is a marker of time through the movement of tides. It sculpts rocks, influences the formation of the Earth’s crust, and erodes wood to reveal its framework. Inspired by water, the movement of bodies becomes fluid, multidimensional, both slow and resolutely powerful.

Biography

Wolastoq and Quebec choreographer, performer, and curator, Ivanie Aubin-Malo received the award for best choreographic work in Quebec in 2025 for her show Wahsipekuk: Beyond the Mountains. Since 2020, she has coordinated the activities of the MAQAHATINE collective, which connects Indigenous movement artists. Based in L’Islet, in Wolastokuk, she recently co-founded the Wolastoqiyik Atonikek cultural center, which allows members to connect by participating in cultural events. She is currently creating her second interdisciplinary show titled Wesuwecuwon, which brings together seven artists, predominantly from the Wabanaki confederacy.

Approach

By bringing together seven performers from the Mi’kmaq, Welasteqewiyik, and W8banaki peoples, choreographer Ivanie-Aubin-Malo convenes the reunion of the Wabanaki Confederacy. With the work Wesuwecuwon, Ivanie Aubin-Malo and her performers envision a future that values everyone’s role and reorients our relationship with time.
